Save our Independent Record Stores

Ok so I just read about this new documentary on Pitchfork about the death of the independent record store! Go here for the original article. Anyway the movie called I Need That Record! The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store was directed by Brendan Toller and explores the reasons why independently owned record shops are getting scarcer.

It features interviews with Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat/Fugazi), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Mike Watt (Minutemen), Patrick Carney (The Black Keys), Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers), Glenn Branca, Chris Frantz (Talking Heads), Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Bryan Poole (Of Montreal), writer Legs McNeil, Noam Chomsky, and plenty of others.

So it got me thinking how much it pisses me off that we have so little choice here in SA when it comes to independent record stores, especially when Musica coverts the CD Warehouses into Musica Megas, where there is just a giant store filled with loads of the same commercial shit that their small stores have. Anyway so I thought we could turn this post into a reference. Let's all get together and put addresses and telephone numbers for all of South Africa's independent record stores into the comments section and then I will make a giant post with everything, so people can support our independent retailers.

Cool, so get busy people!
